After many years of being gridiron and cheer rivals two local township programs, the Colonia Patriots and Iselin Giants have joined forces to create a new program called Broncos Football and Cheer. Although both programs experienced great success in the past depleting participation left many levels with fewer players.
The merge resulted in replenished football and cheer levels with more athletes to substitute in football and fill the cheer mats. The Mitey Mite level football program had so many boys that it allowed for two teams. It also resulted in additional coaches which allow for smaller groups to coach and more individual time for athletes. And although there are never enough volunteers in youth organizations the merge brought together two strong executive boards with board members now sharing responsibilities. Of course more volunteers are appreciated.
Last weekend was the football opener in Hamilton NJ. The sidelines were filled with football players and cheerleaders. In the bleachers were parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends and siblings. The Orange Mitey Mite team played in Staten Island all others were in Hamilton.
The Flag and Tiny Mite teams started the day off in great fashion scoring many touchdowns and pulling flags and making tackles for the Tiny Mites. Though Hamilton proved to be a little too much for the Broncos the players never gave up and the cheerleaders were loud and proud.
In Staten Island the Mitey Mite Broncos were defeated 7-0 in a hard fought match. Staten Island Lions scored on the first play from scrimmage but were held scoreless for the remainder of the game. The Broncos had a late 4th quarter TD negated by penalty but hope to come back strong at home this week.
The Mitey Mite Blue team was dominant winning 33-0 over Hamilton. Brothers Josh and Jeremiah were able to reach the end zone along with Jules, Tyler and RJ. This team has many weapons in its arsenal. Let’s see what next week brings.
The JPW’s looked to be in mid season form defeating Hamilton 46-19. The Broncos scored through the air, ground and on defense. The team was led in scoring by AJ, Jayden and Derek with strong play from Felix, Bryan and Chris and Tyler. There were a few series that
Hamilton made to make the game interesting but the Broncos had a swarming defense with Derrick, Malcolm and Ryan. The Broncos host a 1-0 Staten Island team this Sunday at Colonia High School.
The Junior Varsity team battled all game to prevail 21-20 over the Hamilton Revolution. TD’s by Michael and Isaiah along with great drives led by Matt and tough defense gave the Broncos the edge in the close match. In all it was a successful opener for the Broncos. The Broncos will host Staten Island on Sunday at Colonia High School with the first game at 9AM. Come out and be a part of the excitement!
