Residents Encouraged to “Keep Them Safe”… “Clean Them Out”… and “Take Them Back”

The Woodbridge Police Department (WPD) will participate in the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 22, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the WPD Headquarters located at the Woodbridge Municipal Building, One Main Street (lower level).

The WPD’s participation in the National Prescription Drug 24th Annual Take Back Day is part of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) program that encourages Woodbridge Township residents to safely dispose of unwanted, unused and expired prescription drugs and medicines.  A secure Project Medicine Drop Box is located in the Main Lobby of the WPD Headquarters, Municipal Building, One Main Street (lower level).

Woodbridge Police Director Robert Hubner noted that prescription drug abuse is the fastest growing drug problem in the region and that law enforcement-sponsored prescription drug and medicine take back events are a useful tool in the effort to reduce the diversion and abuse of prescription medications.  Law enforcement investigations have determined that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse and that individuals who abuse prescription drugs often obtain them from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. The WPD collects expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs that are potentially dangerous if left in the family medicine cabinet.

According to the DEA, more than 647,163 pounds – 324 tons – of prescription drugs were collected at nearly 4,902 sites operated by 4,430 state and local law enforcement agencies the last time it was hosted in October 2022.

Woodbridge residents should bring unused and expired prescription drugs (if possible in the original prescription container but not required), powders, pills, liquids, and unused medications (syringes, needles and sharps are not accepted) to the Woodbridge Police Department, Lower Lobby, Town Hall, One Main Street.  For more information, contact the WPD at 732-634-7700.
